HW 1:

In the introduction of “They Say/ I Say” the authors provide templates in hopes that our writing will become more original and creative. Specifically, the authors argue that the type of templates that they use do not dictate the content of what you say rather how you format what you’re saying. Although some people believe our creativity will be taken away using templates, the authors insist that it will help us improvise and fit them into new situations. In conclusion, their view is that templates will evoke new and improved ideas from writers and overall make for more creative writing.

I agree. in my view, the types of templates that the authors recommend can be used to fit a vast majority of words or phrases. For instance, this exercise is set up as a template and every student is going to have a different response because they used different words to fill in the blank. Some might object of course on the grounds that they think its plagiarism. Yet I would argue that although we are using the same words for certain parts, we are creating new ideas to fill in the template. Overall, I believe the use of templates is an important part if creative writing.
